The Plum

It’s Monday, January 04, 2010 and we’ll get this out of the way:

We didn’t go to Johny Corinos as I’d planned. By the time the three of us (me, my wife and our youngest child) got hungry, we really didn’t feel like driving clear across town. Thus, we limited our options to what could be found in the Heights.

We went by that new steak joint (the name escapes me at the moment and the Billings Gazoo has the lamest search function on the planet) but were told there would be at least a 1-hour wait. Plus, the place was packed with urban hillbillies. Some other time, perhaps.

We settled on Chinese and went to the Golden Phoenix at the corner of Main and Airport Rd. They’ve been featured here before, and the food and service was again excellent. Hence, I’ll not repeat what you already know. Great chow, great service and a reasonable price. They stay on my recommended list.

We’ll probably hit Johny Corinos this weekend. I have a hankering for some skilletini.

In other news, my youngest child is going in to have all 4 of her wisdom teeth dug out. I feel her pain. Even though it was 27 years ago, I recall vividly getting mine pulled. I also remember trying first to twist the dentist’s arm off and then trying to throw him out the window. I failed on both attempts, but the lesson was learned: Warn this guy before doing something that’s gonna hurt like all get out.

The dentist understood the error of his ways and declined to call the cops. He instead placed an orange sticker on the inside, front cover of my dental records saying “***WARNING*** Low threshold for pain. Prone to violence.” From then on, other dental people would see that and exercise considerable caution while poking around inside my mouth.

In other news, I’m wondering if the focus of the Obama administration will really shift to the war on terror. Since the Senate passed the 7,000+ page healthcare “reform” bill and there is much to reconcile with the House version, it should be months before a compromise version is sent over for signature. I’m wondering if this latest terrorist attack will managed to put the brakes to this thing and the government will instead focus on something that’s really important.

As before, this threat extends to each and every one of us. It’s obvious from their choice of targets that terrorists don’t give thought to who they murder. Just get as many as you can. Young, old, rich poor, white, black, democrat, republican… it matters not. This is a singularly indiscriminate menace, one that we’ve recently been reminded has not gone away.

So, I’m wondering where the focus will be when our elected representatives return from their holiday recess. Right now, the focus seems to be for each political party to be pointing the finger at each other.

I have but one finger for each:

Yes, here’s a chance to sprinkle some poo in the president’s Wheaties, but at the end of the day, SOMEBODY had better come up with a fix to this bovine effluvia. Play your games as you must, but dammit! It should be SAFE to fly in this country! I can tell you this much: If I lose someone I care about to a terrorist attack, somebody is gonna spend the day on what used to be called “The Big Rich Boot Ride.”

Speaking of bad days:

In other news, I made up a big pot of my jambalaya yesterday. I do love a good jambalaya and I do make a right dandy one, but after spending pret’near all day making the stuff, I want to eat it almost as much as I want a TV dinner. I don’t know what it is about making it that puts me off my feed, but it’s usually a few days before I can plow through a bowl or two.

Other than making jambalaya, I accomplished pretty much zippo this long weekend. We did get out to Doc & Roberta’s to get them their Christmas presents and for my granddaughter to get hers. Which basically means she got 4 Christmases this year. She got one at her home when she first got up, then one at the other grandparent’s, then one with us and one with the McDowels.

We took the shotguns and Havoc out for a last day of the season walk about. The boy managed to scare the heck out of a pair of roosters, but didn’t cut a feather. Havoc is learning what is meant by the assorted hand and voice commands, but still hasn’t put it together with birds. The brush patches we went through are lousy with birds, but he never once acted like he hit an interesting scent. Next weekend, we’ll haul Toby the beagle out there and see if we also have a rabbit dog who cares nothing about rabbits.

In other news, my angelfish died on Sunday. When I got him, he was about the size of a quarter and almost 7 years later and he was as big as my hand. I guess I’m stopping off at the pet shop on the way home tomorrow. A 60 gallon tank with just 4 fish in it looks dumb.

In other news, it’s 96 days until spring turkey season. I’ve been thinking about planning a hunt down Wyoming way. One thing is for certain, I damn sure wont be planning any hunts in Kansas or Oklahoma again. I’m not driving all that way to spend a week in the rain. Plus, I can’t seem to line up any private land to hunt on. Any readers down that way that want to trade some spring turkey hunting for some Montana deer hunting?

I would order some “The temple explodes the chicken cube” just to see what it is. I Googled for it and found a recipe. I think…

“The Temple Explodes the Chicken Cube, use chicken’s primitive Sichuan edition takes its essential component. In this tunnel original, the dice chicken typically is mixed with pre-prepared thick gravy. The iron saucepan is experienced and then chiles and the Sichuan dry pepper is the flash fries in oil the increase fragrantly to come the oil. Then the chicken is mixes fries in oil and the vegetable, with peanut together, increase. The shaoxing wine with enhances the flavor in the thick gravy. Fresh, moist, the unroasted peanut or cashew nuts after commonly used replace their front to roast the edition. In such situation, the peanut or the cashew first throws down into the hot oil in the iron saucepan base, then is fried in oil until golden yellow brown in front of other ingredients increases.

In Sichuan, or works as preparation tunnel, only Sichuan style chilis for example Is used. Smaller, the thinner Sichuanese variety and is perhaps used. The plate most important component is the Sichuan dry pepper few. This is for tunnel these dry pepper its specially numb flavor. To Or the warm numb flavor, is a typical element which Sichuan cooks. The Sichuan dry pepper, with red chilis together, is key component.”

In other news, I got an email from Verizon saying that I could upgrade my phone. Boy, for people who want more of my money, they make it darned hard to get anywhere. First, I needed to log in. Okay, so, what’s my login ID? Don’t have one. I need to register. What’s the account passcode? Don’t have one of them either. Account Locked! Call 1-800-YOU-SUCK… Thank you for calling Verizon…. Si usted está en los US, pero se niegan a aprender Inglés, pulse 1 y luego ir al infierno!

So after a half hour of frustration, I find that yes, I can upgrade my phone, but it’ll cost $179 to do so.

So, just to understand, these asshats send me an email that basically says: “Here’s your chance to spend $179!”

So I reply:

Howdy,

Thanks for the opportunity to give you more of my dough. Imagine my surprise to learn that I am NOW eligible to pay to upgrade my phone. Here I was, thinking that I could do this at any time. I was delighted to learn that for just $179, I could upgrade my phone to one that has three features my present phone doesn’t have.

I was however, sadly unable to take advantage of this opportunity. This is mostly due to be 100% satisfied with my existing phone and the three features available on the $179 upgrade are less interesting than playing scrabble with no vowels.

Fortunately, I checked my records and it turns out that Verizon is now eligible to give me 12 months of free service! Call right away to take advantage of this opportunity!

Hugs, kisses and nothing with latex in it,
Rich
